Niall wins at the Phoenix Park! – 8th August 2009 -

Niall Quinn has won on his first attempt at the famous Phoenix Park Motor Races. Supported by Dunboyne Motor Club, Niall entered the event with no expectations, and despite driving an underpowered car in comparison with his competitors, won the Saturday race.

Qualifying was a struggle for Niall, and traffic proved to be a problem throughout the session. Despite this, Niall lined up 4th for Saturdays race one, and 2nd on the grid for Sundays feature, the Dublin Grand Prix.

Saturday’s race was an eventful one. Niall made a blinding start and immediately passed Simon McKinley’s Lant around the outside of turn one in a daring manoeuvre. For 5 laps he fought with McKinley while the leading duo pulled away. Once Niall broke free he set about closing the gap to Daly and Mullins, and was soon with the leaders.  As Niall was ready to pounce on Dalys Reynard, Daly suddenly lost control of the car on the approach to Dublin corner, as a result of suspension failure, and Niall was in second place hunting down Sylvester Mullins’ Gould-Judd machine. Soon Niall was on Mullins tail and made his move on the approach to the Furry Glen corner, after which Mullins pulled into the pits with an engine problem, leaving Niall with a cruise to the finish  taking a win on his first visit to the Phoenix Park.

Sunday was the race everyone wanted to win, the revival of the “Dublin Grand Prix” after 80 years. The race was staged in memory of David Byers, the late OPW man who played a massive part in past Phoenix Park race meetings. Niall lined up alongside Dan Daly on the front row and was fired up to repeat Saturdays performance. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be, and as the flag dropped for the start, Nialls driveshaft failed, leaving him to limp away from the line with one wheel driving his Reynard-Holden. Retirement followed, and the Dunboyne man was left to watch Dan Daly take the Dublin Grand Prix win.

“Of course it’s disappointing not to have had a shot at the Dublin Grand Prix, but I’m delighted to have come away from the Phoenix Park having won on my first attempt” said Niall after the weekend’s action. “It’s a great honour to join the list of names to have won here, which is definitely Irelands toughest circuit. I’d like to thank Dunboyne Motor Club, without them I wouldn’t be racing this weekend. Id also like to thank my sponsors, Crunch Fitness,  Glenbeigh, LAS security, Quinn Tanker Services, Dipetane, DBSL  sign and display and also the people who prefer to remain anonymous, you know who you are!”

Niall now looks forward to the coming A1GP season, and defending Irelands World Championship Crown.
